Terms & Conditions
Mail Digest is open-source software distributed under the MIT license, free to use and modify. It is provided "as is" with no warranty. The maintainers are not responsible for what the software does when you run it, what third-party AI providers do with the data you choose to send them, or for compliance with the rules of your employer or jurisdiction. Use it responsibly.
1. Agreement
By downloading, installing, or using the Mail Digest desktop application ("the Software") or visiting the website at maildigest.app ("the Website"), you agree to these Terms. If you do not agree, do not install the Software and do not use the Website.
2. The Software
Mail Digest is an open-source desktop application distributed under the MIT license. You can find the source code, build it yourself, modify it, and redistribute it under the terms of that license. The MIT license accompanies the source code and is reproduced verbatim in the project repository.
3. Acceptable use
You agree to use the Software only with email accounts you own or are explicitly authorised to access. You agree not to use the Software to:
- Access, intercept, or process emails from accounts you do not own or are not authorised to read;
- Violate the Gmail API's Terms of Service or any Google product policy;
- Violate the terms of any AI provider you configure (Anthropic, OpenAI, Google AI Studio, Ollama, or others);
- Process emails that contain personal data subject to obligations you cannot meet (for example, regulated health, financial, or legal data covered by HIPAA, GLBA, attorney-client privilege, or similar);
- Infringe the rights of any third party, including intellectual-property, privacy, and confidentiality obligations.
4. Third-party services
The Software connects to third-party services that you configure. Your use of those services is governed by their own terms:
- Google / Gmail — Google Terms of Service and Gmail API policies.
- Anthropic — Anthropic terms if you enable the Claude provider.
- OpenAI — OpenAI terms if you enable the GPT provider.
- Google AI Studio — Google AI Studio terms if you enable the Gemini provider.
- Hugging Face — if you use the default local model, weights are downloaded once from Hugging Face.
The maintainers of Mail Digest are not a party to those agreements and are not responsible for the behaviour, availability, pricing, or data practices of those services. If a third party suspends or terminates your account, the Software may stop working for that provider; you remain responsible for your own contracts with them.
5. API costs
If you choose a provider that charges per-request (Anthropic, OpenAI, certain Google models), you are responsible for the resulting fees. The Software does not bill you and the maintainers receive no share of those fees. Estimate provided in the documentation is informational only.
6. No warranty
The Software is provided "as is", without warranty of any kind, express or implied, including but not limited to the warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement. In no event shall the authors or copyright holders be liable for any claim, damages, or other liability, whether in an action of contract, tort, or otherwise, arising from, out of, or in connection with the Software or the use or other dealings in the Software. This is the MIT licence in plain English — the full text is in the repository.
7. Limitation of liability
To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, in no event will the maintainers be liable to you for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or exemplary damages, including damages for loss of profits, goodwill, data, or other intangible losses, arising out of or in connection with the Software or these Terms, even if advised of the possibility of such damages.
8. AI outputs
The Software uses AI models to generate summaries, priority classifications, task lists, suggested calendar events, and reply drafts. AI outputs can be inaccurate, incomplete, or wrong. You are responsible for reviewing any output before acting on it, sending it, or relying on it. Do not treat suggested replies as ready-to-send without reading them.
9. The Website
The Website is provided for informational purposes. Content may change without notice. The Website is hosted on Cloudflare Pages and uses Google Fonts; their terms apply to those aspects of delivery.
10. Trademarks
"Mail Digest" is the project name. Third-party names mentioned on this site (Gmail, Google, Anthropic, Claude, OpenAI, GPT, Gemini, Superhuman, Shortwave, Ollama, Hugging Face, and others) are trademarks of their respective owners and are referenced only for comparison and interoperability purposes. No endorsement is implied.
11. Changes to the Terms
If these Terms change, we will update this page and bump the "Last updated" date. Continued use of the Software or the Website after a change constitutes acceptance of the new Terms.
12. Governing law
These Terms are governed by the laws of Portugal, without regard to its conflict-of-laws principles. Any dispute that cannot be resolved informally shall be brought before the competent courts of Lisbon, Portugal, unless mandatory consumer-protection law in your country provides otherwise.
